Set up your phone while stopped, or let a passenger operate it. 02 ### Tap Start and allow location Give this site location access when your browser asks. Wait for a usable reading before relying on the display. 03 ### Keep this page visible Tap Stop to end tracking. If you return after the page was hidden, choose Resume for a fresh reading. ## No speed reading yet? Use the message beside the speedometer controls to choose the next step. Location permission is blocked Allow location for this site in your browser and device settings, then choose Retry. Enable precise location where that option is available. Waiting, weak signal or a timeout When safe, try a clearer view of the sky and keep the page visible. Buildings and tunnels can interrupt readings. Check location settings. Once location is allowed, the tool keeps trying automatically. Paused or no fresh reading Return to this page and follow the message beside the controls. Resume starts a fresh reading after a pause. When there is no fresh reading, the previous estimate is no longer current and the display returns to a dash. ## What the numbers mean Current speed An estimate of how fast your device is moving over the ground, in your chosen units. A usable location reading is required. A dash or zero A dash means no current speed is available. Zero can appear when an accepted reading is below the tool’s reliable movement threshold; it is not proof of complete stillness. Maximum speed The highest accepted speed estimate in this page session. Tap the maximum to reset it. Stop and Resume keep the maximum; it is not a saved trip record. ## How the speed estimate works Your browser can provide a speed reading along with your location. When it does not, this tool can estimate speed from changes in usable positions over time. It filters readings before displaying them. Reception, turns, slow movement and delayed updates can affect the result. The position-accuracy value describes uncertainty in location; it is not a measured error in your speed. Speed calculation can continue offline if the browser keeps supplying usable location readings. Reopening or reloading offline is not guaranteed. Internet access and location reception are different things. A tunnel or building can interrupt the reading even when mobile data works. Keep the page visible and use the controls to resume after a pause. Coordinates and speed values are not sent to our analytics; we record coarse usage and error outcomes. Your browser and operating system also handle location services. Accuracy depends on the device and location readings. Poor reception, low-speed location noise, turns and delayed updates can affect the estimate. No fixed speed-error limit has been established for this browser tool. ### Does this speedometer work without internet? Load the page while connected. It can keep calculating speed offline if your browser continues to provide usable location readings. Reopening or reloading the page without internet is not guaranteed. ### Can I check my speed on a train or boat? You can try it as a passenger where a usable location signal is available. On a boat, choose knots for speed over ground (SOG). The tool does not measure speed through water, current strength or velocity made good (VMG). ### Why does it not work on my computer or tablet? The browser may have permission but still be unable to provide location readings suitable for speed. Desktop computers and Wi-Fi-only tablets can return coarse locations. An error alone does not tell you whether the device has GPS hardware. ### Does the browser tool save trips or show average speed? This page shows current and maximum speed estimates.
