# Digital Speedometer — Turn Your Phone Into One Now

Turn your phone into a digital speedometer with a large numeric display. Tap Start, allow location and choose mph, km/h or knots. The number is an estimate of speed over ground; a missing reading is shown as a dash, not zero.

Prefer to use the iPhone app? It also needs location access and a usable signal.

Start requests location to estimate your speed. Keep this page visible; screen-awake support varies. Set up before moving or ask a passenger.

The speedometer calculates speed in the browser and does not send coordinates or speed values to our analytics. We record coarse usage and error outcomes. Your browser and operating system have their own location-service behavior; see our privacy policy for the website’s other data handling.

No download needed to use this speedometer. Want to save your trips? You can optionally download our GPS Speedometer app for iPhone.

## Set up the digital display

1. **Choose your units**

Choose mph, km/h or knots. Set up your phone while stopped, or let a passenger operate it.

2. **Tap Start and allow location**

Give this site location access when your browser asks. Wait for a usable reading before relying on the display.

3. **Keep this page visible**

Tap Stop to end tracking. If you return after the page was hidden, choose Resume for a fresh reading.

## Read the large display

Current speed

An estimate of how fast your device is moving over the ground, in your chosen units. A usable location reading is required.

A dash or zero

A dash means no current speed is available. Zero can appear when an accepted reading is below the tool’s reliable movement threshold; it is not proof of complete stillness.

Maximum speed

The highest accepted speed estimate in this page session. Tap the maximum to reset it. Stop and Resume keep the maximum; it is not a saved trip record.

## An additional display for your phone

Use the phone as an additional speed estimate. It is not a certified replacement for a vehicle’s instruments, and it does not establish that a vehicle with a broken speedometer is safe or legal to drive.

## If the number is missing

Use the message beside the speedometer controls to choose the next step.

Location permission is blocked

Allow location for this site in your browser and device settings, then choose Retry. Enable precise location where that option is available.

Waiting, weak signal or a timeout

When safe, try a clearer view of the sky and keep the page visible. Buildings and tunnels can interrupt readings. Check location settings. Once location is allowed, the tool keeps trying automatically.

Paused or no fresh reading

Return to this page and follow the message beside the controls. Resume starts a fresh reading after a pause. When there is no fresh reading, the previous estimate is no longer current and the display returns to a dash.

A browser location error does not establish whether a device has GPS hardware. Allow location access, check the browser and system location settings, and try a clear view of the sky. Desktop computers and Wi-Fi-only tablets may provide coarse locations unsuitable for speed measurement.

## Keep the page available

After the page has loaded, speed calculation can continue without a network connection if the browser continues supplying usable location readings. Reopening or reloading offline is not guaranteed. Tunnels, buildings and browser backgrounding can interrupt readings even when mobile data is available.

## Keep trips in the iPhone app

The browser speedometer needs no download. Our GPS Speedometer app for iPhone is an optional choice for recorded trips.

Recording, saving and basic viewing of trips are free. Detailed route playback and analysis require PRO.

PRO unlocks route playback, speed and altitude charts, and detailed trip analysis. Trips saved while PRO stay unlocked if PRO later expires.

Free to download, with no ads. PRO is available through a subscription or a one-time purchase; both unlock the same PRO features. The price depends on your region and current offer; check Apple’s purchase screen.

## Digital speedometer — frequently asked

### Does the dial measure speed differently?

The digital and dial pages use the same browser speed calculation. Switching the display style does not establish a different accuracy level.

### Why is there a dash instead of a number?

A dash means there is no current usable speed reading. Allow location access and follow the message beside the controls. A zero can be an accepted low-motion estimate; it does not prove complete stillness.

### Does changing units start a new measurement?

No. Choosing mph, km/h or knots converts the same estimate and session maximum. It does not restart location tracking or change the measurement method.

### Can I leave the speedometer behind another app?

Keep this page visible. Tracking pauses when the page is hidden. Return and choose Resume for a fresh reading; a number seen before the pause is not current speed.

### Does the digital page record trips?

It shows current speed and the maximum accepted estimate in this page session. It does not save routes, distance or average speed. The optional iPhone app provides trip recording and basic saved-trip statistics.

Prefer a needle? Use the [live dial speedometer](/online-speedometer/) — same GPS engine, classic gauge. Want a permanent in-car readout in miles per hour? See the [MPH speedometer app](/mph-speedometer/).

## Keep trips in the iPhone app

The browser tool and GPS Speedometer for iPhone are separate products. The native app adds saved trips, basic HUD and optional PRO features such as Picture in Picture. Free to download, with no ads. PRO is available through a subscription or a one-time purchase; both unlock the same PRO features. The price depends on your region and current offer; check Apple’s purchase screen.
